For centuries, the Cahuilla people inhabited the Palm Springs area, with the stunning canyons serving as a reminder of their rich civilization. During the 17th and 18th centuries, explorers from Spain and Mexico visited the region, and Franciscan missionaries established missions. In 1876, more than 31,000 acres were divided into checkerboard allotments, with half going to settlers and the other half to the Cahuilla tribe. Railroads and ranches soon followed. By the early 1900s, the desert’s climate was recognized for its curative properties. Palm Springs later became a favored retreat for Hollywood, as most film contracts required stars to remain within two hours of production. The area’s charm attracted the industry’s elite, many of whom built homes throughout the valley. Some of these homes, preserved in near-original condition, still stand today.
