Palm Desert

Palm Desert was originally known as Old MacDonald Ranch. In 1920, date palms were planted, leading to the area’s renaming as Palm Village before officially becoming Palm Desert in 1951. The city played a significant role during World War II. In 1943, General Patton established a massive motor pool and maintenance camp in Palm Desert to train troops for combat in North Africa. Over a million soldiers trained here in desert ground combat and aviation. Some of these troops also worked in local mines, extracting heavy metals such as uranium for military use. The site of the army camp was later transformed into “El Paseo,” a high-end shopping district featuring designer boutiques, cafes, and restaurants, earning the nickname “Little Rodeo Drive” after the iconic Beverly Hills shopping destination.

Notable attractions in Palm Desert include The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, El Paseo, McCallum Theater, and Civic Center Park.
