La Quinta

Dates, though not native to California, were introduced to La Quinta in 1880 by the USDA as part of an agricultural experiment. The region’s climate proved ideal for date cultivation, leading to the rapid growth of the industry. Today, La Quinta produces millions of pounds of dates for export each year. In 1926, the La Quinta Resort was established, attracting Hollywood celebrities and socialites, and marking the construction of Coachella Valley’s first golf course. The resort, along with the development of State Route 111, spurred significant growth in the area. La Quinta is now home to PGA West, featuring six world-class golf courses, including La Quinta Resort, and hosts several prestigious golf tournaments and invitationals.
