Indio

Indio began its development in 1876 when the Southern Pacific Railroad linked Yuma, Arizona, to Los Angeles, California. The Southern Pacific Depot and Hotel was built to accommodate workers and visitors, and it also served as a vital stop for refilling train engine water tanks. By 1900, the railroad town transitioned into an agricultural hub, with crops such as onions, cotton, grapes, citrus, and dates thriving in Indio’s favorable climate. Schools were established, and La Casita hospital provided essential medical care to the community. While neighboring cities like Coachella and Thermal grew larger, Indio remained the “Hub of the Valley.” Known as “The City of Festivals” due to the numerous annual events hosted there, Indio has become the fastest-growing city in the Coachella Valley. It is also recognized for its excellent schools and parks.

Notable attractions in Indio include the Coachella Music Festival, Stagecoach Festival, Desert Horse Park, Coachella Valley History Museum, Indio Performing Arts Center, and The Arts Center.
